In a press conference held by Kaz Hirai, Sony at last came to the public to disclose the facts as they understand them, and begin the apologies to their loyal consumers. PSN will be live by next week.
Following the hack into the PSN servers users can expect to see the return of most functionality by the end of next week: online multiplayer, chat, Home (who’s missed this?), PSP Online gaming, streaming TV services & web browsing and movie rental services outside of the PSN Store. The PSN Store is scheduled to be back up by the end of May, however no official date was disclosed, or reasons as to why this would take any longer.
It was announced that Sony still believe that there was no credit card information taken by the hackers, which would actually make sense, given they appeared to simply want to nail Sony and not its users. However they have again asked all consumers to be vigilant, and maintain a close eye on their associated accounts.
When the services return all users will have to perform a mandatory security update, which will request that you change your PSN password, don’t worry, no additional functionality like Linux support has been added! This will then bring you and your friends together once more, so we can finally get some online co-op in on our beloved Portal 2.
To apologies for downtime on the network, Sony is rolling out a “Welcome Back” program, which will be tailored to specific markets to provide consumers with a selection of service options and premium content as an expression of the company’s appreciation for their patience, support and continued loyalty.
This is to include:
- A selection of PlayStation entertainment content for free download.
- All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service.
- Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.
“Additional “Welcome Back” entertainment and service offerings will be rolled out over the coming weeks as the company returns the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services to the quality standard users have grown to enjoy and strive to exceed those exceptions.”
So there it is, no more speculation, rumour, or “my mate Dave” statements from the worldwide web. You will be playing online by this time next week, so pack away the sun glasses, and get out the energy drinks, cos there’s some making up to be done.
