Microsoft Buys Skype – $8.5bn

That’s right, Big Bill and the crew have invested the best part of $10bn for one of the worlds largest video conferencing providers. A kick in the nuts for the developers of the MSN video and voice platforms it may be, but Xbox 360, and in particular Kinect owners, may now be getting an application that will maximise the social elements of the 360 itself.

Microsoft’s CEO, Steve Ballmer is understandably pumped after forking  out the cash, stating “Skype is a phenomenal service that is loved by millions of people  around the world.. Together we will  create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay  connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world.” Not quite a speech to match that of Braveheart, but we look forward to seeing what they are going to do.
