E3: Spec-Ops returns with a bang in Modern Warfare 3

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has been arguably the most hotly anticipated game at this year’s E3 show in Los Angeles, and exactly as expected, long-standing franchise developers Infinity Ward and newcomers Sledgehammer Games were keen to show off all the action and carnage in what’s expected to be the final title in the series’ current storyline.

The popular Spec-Ops co-op mode from Modern Warfare 2 has been revamped and was shown off alongside the expected campaign footage designed to make even Michael Bay weep tears of awe.

Whilst the previous version featured co-op specific roles and objectives that were separate from the main storyline, the new version now resembles the “horde” mode that more and more games are choosing to focus on online (Red Faction: Armageddon and Bulletstorm feature “horde” modes only).

Don’t worry, the deathmatch and competitive modes you have come to know and love are back, but Spec-Ops brings a new twist to the formula and helps it to stand out from the huge pack of FPS games set for release this year.

Like the survival horror-tastic Zombie mode from Black Ops and World at War, players will start off with nothing more than a handgun, and defend themselves against escalating waves of enemies, earning XP for their kills to upgrade their choices of firepower and stand a better chance against the more lethal foes that follow. Russian Spetnaz forces, helicopters, and even suicide-bomber dogs will all descend on players in a frantic battle for survival.

For those of you who don’t know, Black Ops and Modern Warfare may both be part of the Call of Duty franchise and published by Activision, but they are actually from different development studios, and each studio brings their own unique touch the series. Black Ops and World at War were developed by Treyarch and include the horror-tastic co-op Zombie mode. Modern Warfare 2 has it’s own unique co-op mode in the form of Spec-Ops

Modern Warfare 3 is set for release worldwide on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. And you can bet your last quid it’ll be a record-breaker.
